Last week we looked at John 2 and I would like to revisit this to pull out a different thread. God’s word is so deep, we can do this and He will teach us even more things. As we look at this passage, we will see how Jesus reveals His glory and His heart toward us.
“This story is John’s personal account.”
It was not a religious setting but an ordinary setting in everyday life. No church committee would ever choose this as the first miracle and glimpse of Jesus’ glory.
But this miraculous act is so in keeping with what I have come to know as the heart of God towards me, and towards each of us. He broke into the ordinary things in life.
He cared for the potential humiliation of the host. He stepped in when it was beyond the host’s means. He did a brilliant job – exceeding all expectations!
God shows His glory so we would believe in Him. That is why wonders are referred to as signs that point to the Lord. They point to greater things about the Lord than what we can imagine. He breaks into our lives, mostly in the ordinary dealings in life and shows His care and thus His glorious character.
Let’s bring this home. When God acts in our lives, we have to allow Him to get the glory. How do we do that? Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us to
“acknowledge the Lord in all our ways.”
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight (Proverbs 3:5-6, NIV).
To give God the glory, we have to acknowledge how He has worked in us and our situation. We acknowledge Him so His glory can be shown.
