When we speak about God being infinite or boundless, the second attribute of God we will look at today, it means He is without limits. To say God is infinite is to acknowledge that He is not limited to the size of the created universe. He is infinite in all His attributes.
Today, we will focus more on God’s infinitude or “boundlessness.”
Being truly infinite and boundless means that, there is no limit to God’s power, knowledge, His presence or His eternal existence.
God is infinite so even space cannot contain Him (1 Kings 8:27). No matter how far out into the universe you try to imagine being able to see, you would still not have even begun or come close to perceiving God’s infinitude.
So, what do we know about God’s infinitude or boundlessness?
“God is eternal and has an eternal, unending purpose in everything He does, and there is an eternal plan for each person.”
1. God is infinite in knowledge and wisdom
He sees the end and the beginning in one view.
The prophet Isaiah wrote:
Declaring the end and the result from the beginning, and from ancient times the things which have not [yet] been done, Saying, ‘My purpose will be established, and I will do all that pleases Me and fulfills My purpose (Isa 46:10 AMP).
Then in chapter 55, God promised to have compassion on those who turned to Him and that He would abundantly pardon them.
In Isaiah 55:8-9, Paul prayed that the church would have a more intimate understanding of the mystery of God, that is Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge [regarding the word and purposes of God] (Col 2:3). So God is infinite in wisdom and knowledge and we can only perceive a small degree of this infinitude of the wisdom, knowledge, and purposes of God through Christ and through the church.
2. God is infinite in power
Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised, And His greatness is [so vast and profound as to be] unsearchable [incomprehensible to man] (Psalm 145:3 AMP).
3. God is infinite in personal presence
God is not just out there He is right here with us.
The prophet Jeremiah wrote,
“Can a man hide himself in secret places so I cannot see him?” declares the Lord. “Do I not fill heaven and the earth?” declares the Lord (Jer 23:24 ESV).
In Psalm 139:6-12, the “knowledge” can be a comfort for those going through dark times but this can also be terrifying for those who are walking in darkness since God is Spirit and nothing hinders Him nor is hidden from Him. He knows everything, every thought, every invisible motive.
But He also hears every secret cry of the heart, every prayer. He has no limit to His power. There are no boundaries or limits to His presence.
He is without beginning or end; exists outside of time; has always been and will continue forever.
We can see God’s boundlessness in each one of His communicable attributes and He can do anything(Psalm 36:5-7).
On the other hand, God cannot sin, lie, do evil, or die because His very character has determined that He will never do these things. God is infinitely and eternally holy, He is the Truth and life, and He is good, just, and perfect (Psalm 92:15; Titus 1:2; Hebrews 6:18).
The holiness of God is His moral and ethical perfection, His absolute integrity that sets Him apart from all His creatures.
He is simply God of the universe and He wants us to know Him personally and to grow in our relationship with Him.
How to experience the fullness of their relationship with God?
In Ephesians 1, Paul says we get to experience God’s fullness in Christ and in the local church because God “put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all” (Eph 1:22-23).
Once a person places their trust in Jesus Christ and becomes a new creation, he or she is given eternal life.
(John 3:36, 6:47)
His fullness fills all in all.
This means that God is the greatest of all possible Beings; He fills the universe and there can be no one greater than Him. He is the one and only ultimate and necessary being. He is literally the source of everything else.
If we are not clear on what the Bible says about God, we begin to create God in our own image. Our own concept of God can at times be so small, so limited and finite and that’s when people, circumstances and what we see around us become so big.
So why is knowing an infinite and eternal God so vital? Because God is eternal and boundless and has an overarching plan and purpose for the entire universe, and the greatest possible plan and purpose for you.
In 1 Cor 2:7, 9-10, God is calling you into a relationship with Him, to live a life of faith, to experience and enjoy His eternal life.
This is not a blind faith but faith in an eternal and boundless God. Paul is saying to the church who are walking closely with God, you will see His plan.
This is the plan He has had for you from eternity past, a plan that is so incredible that it will astonish you as it unfolds before your eyes and culminates in eternity.
Taking steps of faith to trust Him in your particular circumstance because when you do, He will meet you there. You will be amazed by the strength and wisdom that God will give you because His love, strength, and wisdom are infinite. You will experience eternal life, which never runs out.
The Bible tells us that the purpose of eternal life is to be able to know the only true God and Jesus Christ right now in this lifetime by faith
(John 17:3).
