Thanksgiving Celebration

  • International Chapel of Vienna 16 Karl-Popper-Straße Wien, Wien, 1100 Austria (map)

The world is entering a winter of looming uncertainty. On the heels of a global pandemic came the outbreak of war in Europe. Economic difficulties around the world are now compounding the challenge of the past two years.

On what should we anchor our hearts in turbulent times? What should our attitude be? The Scriptures present an answer that is both profound and surprising in its simplicity – focus our minds on the surest things and be thankful.

Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation] by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your [specific] requests known to God. And the peace of God [that peace which reassures the heart, that peace] which transcends all understanding, [that peace which] stands guard over your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus [is yours]. — Philippians 4:6-7)

The Scriptures call us to direct every anxious thought to God in a posture of thanksgiving. As the burdens we carry become heavier in uncertain times, we are tempted to become critical and fearful. The worries of this life threaten to poison our minds, but God designed a spiritual antidote: thankfulness and gratitude.

So let’s gather together and have praise as our weapon against the world’s worries and winter’s gloom. Remember: when the leaves are gone, we see more of the sky. By recounting God’s  faithfulness in the past, and God’s goodness here and now, we can thank God for the future yet unseen. For the God of yesterday and today is the God of tomorrow. And by looking up and giving Him thanks we overcome the darkness as a church.

We will see that the clouds will clear, the storm will pass, and God will be there; the anchor held.

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. — Colossians 3:15
